Information for Adult Learners
Online lessons may offered to new students. This is considered on a case by case basis.
There are several types of adult learners:
Each student has a different story, and different strengths. I work with you to develop your playing and music reading skills in the way which suits you. You don't have to take exams, though you can if you want to. You don't have to always play classical music either!
I do expect all my students to do regular practice, and to play a selection of scales and arpeggios as well as their pieces.
I normally expect you to have a lesson every week, as this way I can correct any technical issues before they become habits. If you need a week (or three) off due to school holidays / business trips etc, just let me know. I teach during the day and in the evenings, but I don't teach at weekends.
I am happy to arrange a trial lesson and will provide advice to assist you in renting or buying a suitable instrument. Once started, I do expect you to make the commitment to attend lessons on an ongoing basis, and give me sufficient notice (at least 5 lessons) in writing if you would like to stop.
Quite a few of my students also enjoy working through the written music theory syllabus, as it helps to consolidate their music reading and comprehension skills.
Please take a look at my main "LESSONS" page for further information, and phone me on 07958 580 598 if you'd like to have a chat about your exciting future as a cellist.

- "It doesn't matter what frame of mind I'm in when I get to you, I always feel better by the time I leave" (JE 2021)

- "I would like to sincerely say that you have been the best cello teacher anyone (especially a slow adult learner like me!) could wish for. You have not only taught me with humour and endless patience, you have also been so kind and understanding when my work life became particularly stressful and you have gone out of your way to accommodate me. I cannot thank you enough and I am truly proud to have passed my Grade 1 and 2. I promise you I will continue with the cello once I am settled in ****** and I only hope that I find a teacher half as good as you. Thank you for being so wonderful - you were not only a music teacher but a friend as well. I wish you every success and I am eternally grateful to you." (LC 2016)
- "Just wanted to formally put in an email a massive THANK YOU for organising the two christmas concerts. Really was such a good experience and had a really fantastic time listening and playing. Was really lovely to meet some adult learners also and it has given me a bit more drive to get better at the cello!" (AG 2015)
