ABRSM Grade 6 Cello Resources Page

Congratulations! You have started work towards your Grade 6 Cello examination.

Music Theory
Please note that to carry on to Grade 6 and beyond you will need to take and pass your Grade 5 written Music Theory examination.

There are new music theory requirements from 2018. The changes can be viewed here: gb.abrsm.org/en/theory2018/

The ABRSM Grade 5 music theory examination can now be taken online at any time.

You can get official ABRSM music theory books, which are good, and you can buy the answer books separately.

You can also get the Music Theory for Young Musicians series, which go up to Grade 5. These are great for younger students (and adults too!) and have nice well set out pages and colourful pictures.

You can also order past music theory examination papers and answer booklets (ordered separately) at reasonable prices. Each booklet contains 4 exam papers. You can download the NEW THEORY SAMPLE papers from the ABRSM website. The 2017 sample papers (now called practice papers) and answer books are available to buy and reflect the new syllabus requirements.

Here is a helpful online course by Victoria Williams, which will help to prepare you for the exam: https://mymusictheory.zenler.com/courses/grade-5-music-theory-abrsm/ - This one is a paid course, but you can email your assignments to her for marking. This has been updated for the new 2018 Music Theory requirements. She also offers a free version: www.mymusictheory.com/learn-music-theory/for-students/grade-5/free-online-course. If you prefer a printed book, she also offers those via Amazon. Her books have answer sheets in them too. They are quite "wordy" but great for people who like to read.

Pieces
Here is the link to the ABRSM's Grade 6 cello repertoire and requirements list. You can also listen to previews of pieces here.

Bach Cello Suites
If you are going to buy a copy of the Bach Cello Suites, I recommend the Barenreiter edition.

Aural Tests
Hofnote is a great resource for preparing you for the aural tests, and you can buy a 4 month subscription for your grade. www.hofnote.com/courses.asp

The ABRSM do an Aural Trainer app, which is great. However, this is currently only available for i-phone / i-pad etc, and not for PC or android.

Other fancy resources!

POSITION PIECES FOR CELLO - Book 1 - Rick Mooney

These are fabulous books. The first covers up to 4th position.
Here's a "play along" version with live cello

POSITION PIECES FOR CELLO - Book 2 - Rick Mooney
The second is 5th position and above, in tenor clef. Perfect for developing your higher level sight reading.
(For Grade 7 cello you have to do sight reading in tenor clef!)

Here is a helpful YouTube playlist which plays all the pieces from Book 2, so you can check whether you've got them right.

ABRSM Cello Scales Grade 6 "Random Scale Bag" Printable, 2016-19
Coming soon!

When you do your exam, the examiner will ask you to play some of your scales and arpeggios. They won't be in the same order as they are in your scale book and you will have to play them from memory. To help you with this, here is the Random Scale Bag.

Download the pdf, print out on to card and cut it up!

PDF coming soon!

In the meantime, please check your scale book for full information.

INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Take a card.
  • Say the scale name out loud.
  • Play the scale or arpeggio as well as you can (if it's a bit slow then that's fine - it's better to be accurate).
  • If you get it right then give yourself a pat on the back and put the card to one side.
  • If you don't know where to start then look it up in your scale book FIRST and then play it correctly three times.
  • Go on to the next card :)

USEFUL: This PDF will print out accurately on to L7163 sticky labels (14 per sheet) in case you want to stick them on to larger cards!

NOTE: These are to be used either with or without the accompanying sheet music (your scale book), depending on your current standard.

NOTE: Please click the PDF to download it. The image is just a preview and won't print clearly.
